Why the soil under concrete deserves attention
The USDA describes the Victoria soil series as very deep, clayey, well drained, and very slowly permeable. Its description also notes cracking in the clay profile and that water can enter quickly when the soil is dry and cracked but very slowly when it is moist.
That does not mean every Victoria property has the same soil. It does mean generic advice can be risky. The actual site, drainage, fill history, moisture conditions, and intended loads should guide preparation.
Site details worth checking before a pour
- Existing soil and any prior fill
- Drainage direction and low spots
- Excavation depth and base material
- Compaction plan
- Slab thickness and intended loads
- Reinforcement and joint layout
- Transitions to existing concrete, buildings, and streets
Driveways, shop slabs, and foundations are different jobs
A residential driveway, a metal-building slab, and a structural foundation can sit on similar ground but have very different load, reinforcement, edge, utility, drainage, and inspection needs. Square footage alone is not enough to define the scope.
