What can change the scope and estimate
Concrete estimates become more useful when the scope is specific. These are some of the details that can change labor, material, equipment, and timing:
- What will sit on the slab
- Building plans and dimensions
- Thickness and edge design
- Reinforcement needs
- Plumbing or electrical below slab
- Base preparation and elevation
- Finish requirements
- Permit and inspection requirements
Do not price a slab by square feet alone
Two slabs with the same area can have very different scopes. A thin outdoor pad and a reinforced shop slab are not the same job. A useful estimate should describe what is underneath and inside the concrete, not just the final dimensions.
Questions to ask before approving the work
- What is included in removal, grading, base prep, forms, reinforcement, and cleanup?
- What slab thickness and finish are being quoted?
- How will water move across and away from the new concrete?
- Where are control joints planned and why?
- What access does the crew need for trucks, pumps, or equipment?
- What is the curing plan and when can the surface be used?
- Does any part of the project need a permit, right-of-way approval, or inspection?
